Chapter Twenty

When Lawrey left work that evening, she didn’t go straight home.

She lifted her hand and knocked on the door. She didn’t want to be here, but she needed to speak to her ex-husband about their son.

Patrick’s new wife, Alyssa, answered the door. Lawrey remembered how old she’d felt when she’d been thirty. She’d already been a mom of an eleven-year-old boy by then and had been married for the same number of years. She’d felt middle-aged, but looking back now, she realized how young she’d been. She wished she’d appreciated it. The woman in front of her now seemed so youthful by comparison.

Alyssa’s expression fell when she saw who was at the door. “Oh, hey, Lawrey. Can I help you with something?”

“Is Patrick in?”

“No, sorry. He’s out right now. Can I help?”

“Not really. I need to talk to him about our son.”

Alyssa raised a pair of perfectly shaped eyebrows. “Your son? Your adult son?”

“Yes, you remember. The one who’s closer to your age than Patrick is.”

She couldn’t help herself. Something about this woman always got her back up. Was it that she was younger and prettier and had been the one who’d ended up making Patrick happy? Probably.

Alyssa folded her arms across her annoyingly perky chest. “Lawrey, Tommy is a grown-up now. I’m sure whatever this is can wait. It’s not like he’s a small child and the two of you are co-parenting.”

“No, but he’s still our son, and we’ll always be his parents, whether you like it or not.”

“Fine.” Alyssa’s shoulders slumped. “You want to come in and wait?”

She didn’t, not really, but she really did need to talk to Patrick.

“Fine.”

Alyssa stepped back, allowing her through the front door. It felt strange being inside a house that now belonged to Patrick but that also didn’t belong to her. She couldn’t see any signs of Patrick in the décor at all, not that Patrick was ever into all of that.

“You want to sit down?” Alyssa said, motioning at the couch.

Lawrey perched awkwardly on the edge of it and sought her mind to think of something to say by way of conversation.

“So, how are things with you and Patrick?” Lawrey asked eventually.

Alyssa curled her lip. “Do you really want to know?”

Lawrey glanced away, catching sight of a framed photograph of their wedding day on the wall. “Not really. Just making conversation.”

The rattle of keys in a lock caught her attention, and they both glanced toward the door as it opened. Lawrey was relieved Patrick was home.

He stopped short when he saw her. “What are you doing here, Law?”

“Can we talk in private?”

“We’re in private. Anything you want to say can be said in front of Alyssa.”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake.” Lawrey barely managed to stop herself rolling her eyes. “Fine. Tommy’s got himself caught up in something. I assume you heard about that young couple who were killed earlier this week up at Sandtown?”

“Of course.”

“Turns out Tommy was sleeping with the girl, Emily. Only now we’ve learned that the girl killed inside the trailer wasn’t Emily at all.
